Vic: 2,000 farewell Father Brosnan at state funeral
MELBOURNE, April 3 AAP - Up to 2,000 mourners filled Melbourne's St Patrick's Cathedraltoday for the state funeral of former Pentridge Prison chaplin Father John Brosnan.
Father Brosnan, who administered the last rights to Ronald Ryan, the last man hangedin Australia, died last week aged 83.
Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart told those gathered that Father Brosnan gave greatcomfort to prisoners and their families during his 30 years as Pentridge chaplin.
"I believe Father Brosnan's two remarkable gifts were his ability to convey warmthand give hope," he said.
Premier Steve Bracks, Opposition Leader Robert Doyle, state National Party leader PeterRyan and former premiers Joan Kirner and John Cain were among those present to pay tributeto Father Brosnan.
