Oddities of the week
SYDNEY, April 20 AAP - Oddities of the week:
+ Thirsty treasure hunters engaged in an underwater scramble after a semi-trailer crashed
near Murwillumbah and dumped 33,000 bottles of beer into the Tweed River. Opportunists
donned scuba gear and set up production lines to recover the grog, and eight required
hospital treatment after being cut by broken bottles. "It wasn't locals who took the beer,"
said local publican Barry Newman, "but touristy-looking people, Queenslander-looking people."
+ If Australia wants sexy politicians it will have to change the layout of Canberra's
Parliament House, according to an expert in feng shui - the Chinese art of measuring energy
flows in buildings. "In some countries you find there's a big extension in the northern
portico section of the building and so (it means) they're madly bonking away," said Hong
Kong-based Nuri Vittachi. But nothing of the sort goes on in Canberra, he concluded.
+ A national clothing retailer apparently does not want to sell its wares, at least
not if the buyer is Pauline Hanson. "If she happens to come into your store please try
not to sell Cue to her. She can only do our image great harm, given her persona," said
a staff newsletter item after the One Nation leader spent $600 at the chain's Townsville
store in February. "It is very much discriminating against me," said Ms Hanson, who rejected
an apology and offer of a $1,000 gift voucher. Cue said no personal offence was intended
from the "comical" item.
