SA: Research needed to set population targets: communique

A communique from a national population summit says research is required to set Australia's
optimum population target and annual quotas for immigration.

The communique, stemming from the national summit in Adelaide last month, has today
been delivered to federal, state and territory governments.

It calls for all governments to formally commit to a national population policy to
avoid a damaging decline in growth and rapidly ageing profile.

The document says the social and economic wellbeing of current and future generations
relies on population growth.

It's calling for urgent research to be commissioned to establish an optimum population
target and corresponding annual quotas for immigration.

The communique also says immediate attention should be given to policies that address
the effects of an ageing population and declining fertility.
